Accounting industry faces its own doctor shortage According to the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, more than 64,000 students graduated with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accounting last year, the highest level in more than 30 years. But even as these numbers rise, the number of doctorate degrees is steadily declining. To reverse this trend, the AICPA has created an Accounting Doctoral Scholars Program, which provides cash incentives for accountants to pursue their doctorates. More than 70 accounting firms and several state CPA societies, including the Massachusetts Society of CPAs, have committed $15 million to the program.
